How this is calculated

Room length → seating distance ≈ room − 2.5 ft → size = distance ÷ 1.6…1.2. Your 12 ft room (144″) minus 2.5 ft = 9.5 ft seating distance. At 9.5 ft (114″): relaxed 114 ÷ 1.6 = 70.1″, sweet spot ÷ 1.4 = 85″, immersive ÷ 1.2 = 95.2″. Snapped to a buyable 85″.

What size TV for your room?

Most "room size" calculators secretly just ask for your viewing distance. We let you start from either one. The logic: your seating distance sets the ideal size — roughly distance ÷ 1.4 for a 4K sweet spot. If you only know your room's length, we estimate the seating distance (sofa about 2.5 ft off the back wall) and size from there. For a standard 8–10 ft living room, that lands on a 65-inch TV.

How we calculate it

Room length → seating distance → size. Seating distance ≈ room length − ~2.5 ft (sofa off the back wall). Then size range = distance ÷ 1.6 (relaxed) to distance ÷ 1.2 (immersive), with distance ÷ 1.4 as the sweet spot. We snap the result to a real, buyable size.

Can a TV be too big for a room?

Rarely in terms of immersion — but yes if you'll sit very close. Under about 1× the diagonal in feet, a big 4K screen forces too much eye movement and can reveal pixels on lower-quality content. If your distance is short, we'll flag it and suggest a size that still fills your wall without overwhelming you.

Will it fit your wall or stand?

Knowing the diagonal is only half the job — the TV also has to physically fit the wall or console you have in mind. Add your wall or stand width in the calculator above for an instant fit check, then confirm the exact footprint with the TV dimensions calculator. Shopping a specific size?
